We had English class the other day and our teacher John told us about THE TRUTH BEHIND NURSERY RHYMES!!!!
I don't think they were quite the innocent meaningless songs and rhymes we thought they were as kids!
So anyway, Baa Baa Black Sheep:
Now we all know that Black Sheep means troublemaker, usually the only troublemaker in a particular group. In the song, there is a line that goes "One for the master, one for the dame and one for the little boy who lives down the lane"
Now see. The "master" here actually really refers to the King, and the "dame" refers to the Church, the "little boy" here is actually the people. Apparently in i-dunno-which-century England, the taxes were really high. The people had to pay taxes to the King and the church, this left them with only one-third of their money for themselves! Thus, the line "One for the little boy who lives down the lane"
So that's how the song Baa Baa Black Sheep really came about. A song about taxes!!
And I thought it was just about some poor black sheep about to get sheared for his wool and sold off to make winter cloaks or something.

Next, Humpty Dumpty:
Once upon a time in this little European country, there was this King/General called Humphrey or something that sounds like that anyway. Maybe it was Humpity. I'm not sure. Details are a little vague on this one, I might have drifted off a bit during this story..
So this guy was stupid as. There was a war going on between his neighbouring countries. France and some other country I cant remember. What this guy does is he agrees to help BOTH countries. Things enfolds and in the end, this guy loses everything, looking like the biggest fool in the world. Thus, the song: Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall ( The stupid guy was siding both sides, so he was metaphorically 'sitting on a wall') Humpty Dumpty had a great fall ( The guy lost everything he had) All the Kings horses and all the kings men, couldnt put Humpty together again ( Even though his soldiers and the cavalry tried to save him, it was all too late) See? All makes sense!!! Haha, and get this, apparently this King had an egg-shaped head, and that's why we see Humpty Dumpty usually illustrated as an egg, kids!

Finally, Sleeping Beauty.
When it was first written, Sleeping Beauty was meant for adults, not some romantic and happy fairy tale as portrayed by Disney.
There was a war in Europe between 2 countries that lasted a hundred years ( Sleeping Beauty slept for a hundred years) and because of that war, the 2 countries were shut out from the outside world, causing them to stay in their time while the outside world slowly changed and became more modern ( When Sleeping Beauty fell asleep, the whole country slept with her for a hundred years) This story was to show just how the war caused the 2 countries to stop growing while everything in the outside world was changing and growing.
Well, now that I've explained everything and probably destroyed most people's innocent notions of these fairy tale, I'll take my leave for now.
